Let me begin by saying, I am definitely not trying to offend anyone who thinks the grocery store is a cute or cool way to meet the next love of their life. I more just want to find out if my experience is normal and other people find their grocery store to be a meeting grounds for potential dates.
I can't remember the exact date, but I do know it was last winter, on a Sunday morning. I remember this because I went to the store to get food since we were having people over for the Cavs-Lakers game later that day. I rolled out of bed, brushed my teeth, put my hair in a pony-tail, and threw on a hoodie and tennis shoes, as I normally do on the weekends to run any errands I might have. To give you a better picture for those of you who don't know me, I pretty much looked like a 12 year old boy with messy eyeliner half worn off from the night before. I go to Giant Eagle where I usually shop and am in my own little world, wandering about aimlessly, when I am approached by the GSS (see title). Before I go on let me tell you that I am a fairly nervous and shy person if I don't know you. And ESPECIALLY when I am at the store, I don't want to be bothered. I want to get my food and go. GSS comes up and says, "I just had to come over and say something." I say, "OK." He introduces himself, and shakes my hand. At this point I am about as red as a monkey's ass. I introduce myself. Why you ask? I have not one idea other than A. I am too nice, and B. I didn't know what else to do. He then followed with, "I don't know if you're single or have a boyfriend, or what..." And before he could finish, because I wanted to get the hell out of there, I interjected that yes, I did have a boyfriend, that I live with (had to add that in there). He said he understood, and that he just had to come over and say something, and to have a nice day, or something of that nature, and walked away. Seems harmless, right? Yeah, maybe for a normal person, but not for this girl. I have a lot of anxiety so stupid things, such as this make me super nervous. I was mortified and then proceeded to finish my shopping as fast as possible and pray that I did not pass by this guy again (which thankfully I didn't). Fine. Done. I'm embarassed, but it's over. Yeah, not so much...
Fast forward about a year or so. This past Sunday I decided to go to Whole Foods to get some things for a delicious batch of guacamole that I wanted to make (which turned out fab by the way). I was only there for a short time, just picking up a few things, and surprisingly it wasn't crowded for a Sunday. Oh yeah, I should probably mention that I looked the same as my previous GSS shopping experience. Rolled out of bed. Check. Hoodie. Check. Tennis shoes. Check. 12 year old scrubby boy look-alike. Check. I am not even kidding you, as I am unloading my groceries onto the conveyor belt at the check out, the same guy from Giant Eagle came up to me and said the same thing he said to me at GE the year before. Introduces himself. Check. I don't know if you're single or have a boyfriend. Check. Denied. Check. Well I just had to come over and say something. Check. WTF?!? Same person!! Really? The same lines. Seriously? Does he have a bad memory and not remember horrifying me the first time? Does he do this often and just get all his prey mixed up? I don't get it. Maybe if I were single and looking for a date, I would have thought this was sweet or exciting. This isn't the case though and little does this person know, I am scarred for life and currently looking for a new grocery store. Not really, but seriously contemplating...I would love to hear if this is a regular happening for others out there, and if so, I am going to start an online dating website dedicated to people who like to find love in the frozen food aisle.
